Symmetric and asymmetric compound natural and synthetic pigments have extensive varieties in watercolor painting. For example, natural watercolor pigments obtained from minerals and plants, such as indigo and ochre, provide organic and vivid outlooks. In contrast, synthetic pigments have greater color variation, stability, and quality. Several watercolor pigments can be semitransparent, while others are opaque, allowing for covered portions and highlights to be blended in. Granulating pigments are used to simulate elemental stones and stone-like foliage in their textures with this paint providing a feathery effect.
